View Full Version : A Warning For Anyone Who Wants To See Indiana Jones....

I suggest you bring a pillow. When I slept through.... sorry, ahem....when I saw this travesty of a movie, I couldn't help but ask myself, "Why am I here and when does this end?" :mavfist:
The severe lack of plot added to the drowsy atmosphere of the theater as I scanned the aisle to discover my friends fighting their hardest to stay awake after lame cliché after lame cliché hit the screen. :? Every time I saw Harrison Ford get hit I felt like I was watching Senior Citizen Brawl 2008. Older actors can still be Action Heroes (see: Live Free or Die Hard) but watching this movie I felt like I was ringside to my grandpa getting a Grade-A beatdown.
Sadly, the "action sequences" couldn't save this movie as they were about as tired as Harrison Ford after a long day of shuffleboard. Too often did the movie ask the viewer to accept a ridiculous scenario just for the sake of moving the sluggish plot along. Did you guys know that you can go over a thousand foot waterfall into a host of jagged rocks without so much as a single scrape? Me neither. Then they did it THREE TIMES. :blow: That's not even mentioning the end which involved a "twist" so rotten that even M. Night Shyamalan would say "That's a stretch."
I loved the first 3 Indy movies. I like Harrison Ford as an actor. I like Steven Spielberg as a director. I like going to movies and being entertained. Sadly, all of these took a major hit as I watched Indiana Jones and the Goblet of Prune Juice. :? If you've already seen it and somehow enjoyed it....more power to ya. Some people might enjoy this movie and it isn't entirely without its uses as I'm sure researchers would be happy to know that there's a cure for insomnia. :mavshock:
All in all, I give this movie: 3 out of 10.
Take my advice and spend your money seeing Iron Man for the 8th time before seeing Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.

I agree with you that you're better off seeing Iron Man for the 8th time before this "goblet of prune juice" lol, nice... I think you were a little harsh in some ways, but overall, I agree with your point...
This is my take on the movie... first reason why you shouldn't waste your time..
When people say "How was the movie?" the answer SHOULD be, "AWESOME!" and that's generally not the answer. I know when people ask me and my husband, we have to give this drawn out explanation...
The ending really ruined it for me, had the ending been different, (last half hour? 20 minutes?) i could have walked away feeling differently. But it was the icing on the cake. Yeah, there were a lot of over the top moments (falling down huge waterfalls, surviving close range gunfire, etc..) and then you say, "But, all Indiana Jones are like that." Then again, I expected MORE than just an indiana Jones movie. This movie had a lot of potential that it didn't live up to. George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg are too arrogant & cocky and think anything that's "their" idea is a good one. Plus, I think this was just a money-maker for them. They should have more pride with what they put their names on. Then again, Lucas DID give us Jar-Jar Binks.
Bottom line, movies in the 80's were made WAY different than now. What WORKED back then, doesn't always work now. This movie is your typical Indiana Jones movie, and maybe not even as good. Slap a bad ending on it, and you get an F+. Just kidding, probably a C+.

>>Hot Chief
What are these "non-vampire" hours? What is this "Sunlight"? Sounds kinda scary, I think I'll keep my sleep schedule.
>>Black Mamba
I dunno if I was 'too harsh' on the movie. Maybe it was just my perception or maybe I'm still fuming over the huge disappointment, I still think the movie was a bomb. I totally agree with you that this was clearly just a money-making scheme. I think it's sad that Spielberg/Lucas/Ford are cashing in on what clearly should not count as an Indy movie. :(

I agree with your opinions on this movie. We went to see it tonight even after being told "why this movie sucked" by people at work. We went to see it because it was Indiana Jones. Unfortunately well.. maybe fortunately I was told of the plot before we went to see it >.> and by plot I mean the last 5 min of the movie. I figured people were over exaggerating it.
I mean ... lets visit the first 3 movies. The 1st one ends by people being "burned" alive by opening a box. The 2nd one has someone pulling out hearts of victims that stay alive longer than they should, not to mention the mind controlling blood thats cure is being burned by fire. The 3rd one, he saves his father from a gun shot wound by pouring water on it. Any of these movies being shown now would have people reacting the way they are now about this one. So I went in expecting the same type Indiana movie. And thats exactly what I got.
Tho I personally did enjoy the idea behind the story.
Ants and monkeys were a little much and left me rolling my eyes >.>
But I completely agree they should of made this movie for 2008, not the 1980s. Unfortunately I was catching hints about future movies staring that kid... which makes me a sad panda.

well me and my husband loved it and that "twist" wasn't bad at all if you think about it all the past indy films had supernatural and it's a ligitamate thiery on that particular cultures past. it made perfect sense to me. like i said we liked it and anyone looking at this you can still go see it and have your own veiw who knows you might be like me and enjoy it you won't know till you see it.

As with any movie, you are going to have those who hate it, are disappointed in it, thought it was okay or loved it. We all have different tastes in movies and what one person hates another loves. I don't know if I'll enjoy it or not but I'll probably wait until I can rent it to find out. I didn't go to the theater to watch the other Indiana Jones movies and I don't plan on going to see this one.
The Narnia Chronicles - Prince Caspian on the other hand I do plan on going to see.

Harrison Ford did an EXCELLENT job. I was worried that it had been too long... but he did just as good as the first ones. And he DID NOT ACT OLD AT ALL. Even as old as he's gotten he still made my little heart flutter. He was fantastic and has not lost an OUNCE of his touch.
As for the movie - it sucks. I agree with mamba, they were WAY too arrogant and ruined a perfectly good trilogy. As for the enemies bad aim and the surviving of waterfalls - that's classic indy. No problem there. And the classics even had mysticism and other-worldly stuff in them - which is fine... but this one went WAY too far. It almost mocked the originals. It had some extremely funny moments. And it was nice to see what happened to some of the main characters. But I actually CRIED at the end of this movie because of it's horribleness. They completely missed the target and upset a lot of Indy fans.
The only people who can enjoy this are the people who did not see or appreciate the first three. One and a half thumbs down. I can't say enough, I could go on for pages, but it is just BAD.

Alright, let me just say to the people who really enjoyed this movie that I never said my review of the film was the absolute, end-all critique. I even stipulated that I can see how some people will enjoy this film, but what got me the most was how hokey they made it. I can absolutely appreciate the fact that the first 3 Indy movies had a lot of supernatural content, but at least the content was original.
Tell me that Shia Labeouf swinging from vines like Tarzan wasn't a groan-inducing shark jump (point where the film went drastically downhill). I'd even accept the poor aim because let's face it.....a dead Indy makes for a short movie. The selective magnetism burned me (I don't think the lights of that warehouse were made of plastic) and the ending was so ridiculous I can't help but FACEPALM at the thought of it. :x I was sitting in a waiting room the other day and Aliens Vs Predator was on the TV and wouldn't you know it.....it TOO ended with an alien spaceship taking off into outer space while the protagonist somehow makes it back safely from some crazy locale. AVP called, it wants its ending back. :mavfist:
Unfortunately I just can't agree with that movie being "more of the same" from the Indy series. Had any of the trilogy been released today I would love them and could still appreciate the nostalgia (just like Grindhouse) of the era they were meant to portray. While Harrison Ford may still tickle many a fancy, he was definitely 'sportin' a pair of grandpa pants in the first scene which immediately took me out of the 'action hero' mentality. That and, minus the very first whip-swinging scene in the warehouse, the stunts were put in the hands of the most unbelievable greaser and a bunch of digital monkeys. Sorry Indy, if knowledge is treasure, the 'treasure' of this movie is better left buried. :mavshock:

My husband, his friend and I actually talked about the same thing. lol. So much of it seemed unoriginal. The vine thing (totally stupid, I laughed at it's dumbness during the movie haha) was a tarzan moment. The first thing I thought of. The walk into the "treasure room" felt so much like National Treasure it was scary. And the dead people coming out of the walls made "The Mummy" come straight to mind. Also the part with the ants was just like the Mummy's part with the scarabs... same concept, same body movements... yikes...

i wouldn't go as far as to compare an indiana jones with movies like the mummy or national treasure, because all they are is rip-offs of indiana jones. But I agree with you sniperess about it's unoriginality at times. It's like they just threw out a story and were like, "umm, that's good enough."
I pretty much already said how i feel about the movie and I still stand by that, I understand some people will like it, and I wish I hadn't gone in with such high expectations. I still think the acting was fine and I thought Harrison Ford did a great job along with Shia and Cate, at least, they did the best they could for what they were working with.
It's definitely more of a rental in my opinion, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Prince Caspian :D

Don't you see though? What's the point of having a forum if you're not allowed to share your thoughts and opinions with others? There was nothing wrong or inappropriate about the topic at hand and it generated a good debate about the quality of a movie. No one ripped on each other for their stance on the subject and it got people to analyze a topic deeper than just "I liked it" or "I hated it." Sharing your thoughts and opinions with others while listening to theirs allows you to grow as a person. I hope you don't take this thread as a personal insult to anyone who enjoyed the film as that was definitely not its intent. :mavhug:
